Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir kicked off a new innings as a parliamentarian on Monday, 17 June. Gambhir took oath as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Member of Parliament from East Delhi.
Gambhir retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018 and joined the BJP ahead of the general elections.
Gambhir represented the East Delhi constituency of the national capital. He was contesting against Aam Aadmi Party's (AAP) Atishi, who has worked extensively in the education sector in Delhi.
East Delhi constituency went to polls on 12 May along with six other Delhi constituencies.
After taking the oath, Gambhir tweeted that he will perform his duties with passion.
India-Pak Match, Gambhir & Controversy
As India defeated Pakistan at Old Trafford in Manchester, stretching their lead over Pakistan to seven wins out of seven in the ICC World Cup, Gautam Gambhir received flack from netizens for his appearance and participation.
People on social media were quick to remind the MP from East Delhi of his responsibilities. Twitterati expressed agitation at him commentating for a game and earning off it rather than being in his constituency and working for the people.
