Liverpool defender Virgil Van Dijk has voted his fierce rival, Raheem Sterling for PFA player of the year award in recognition to the latter’s improvement as a player this season.
The Dutch international himself is amongst the favourites to win the prestigious award after being the backbone of Liverpool’s defence this season, which has been the best in the entire division.
“I voted for Raheem Sterling. I did what I thought and I thought he deserves it. I am just being honest. I think he has improved a lot as a player. We will see if he wins it.”Virgil Van Dijk
The 27-year old further said, “Raheem has had a fantastic season. I could have voted for Bernardo Silva as well, and another couple of players from City.” However, it is important to note that no player can vote for a a teammate.
When asked about what matters more to him as a player, the Dutch skipper said, “Individual trophies? I don’t know. Of course, you’re going to be proud, that is something you have to be, but all the hard work in the training ground is something we all did together. It is to win something as a team, a collective thing as a club. Hopefully that is something that will happen.”
Liverpool currently are at top of the table in Premier League, two points clear of Pep Guardiola’s side.
“I think all of the teams of the league would love to be in our position right now. We are in a great situation.”Virgil Van Dijk
The Dutch international joined the Anfield club for £75m in January last year.
Such has been the competition between the two this season, that no other team has been able to cope with it in England. While City visit Tottenham at their new home on Tuesday night for their first ever UCL encounter, Liverpool host FC Porto on Monday.
