Even though the Spanish team has put up a scratchy performance at the FIFA World Cup so far, former Real Madrid and Spain striker Fernando Morientes said there’s nothing to worry about. He added that Spain will show more attitude in the knockout stages.
The La Liga Ambassador has travelled to India for the announcement of Girona FC deciding to embark on a two-game trip to India. They are only the second team from Europe’s top five leagues to bring a team to this country. The matches will take place against Kerala Blasters, from the Indian Super League on 28 July, and A-League side Melbourne City a day earlier on 27 July.
Speaking about the announcement, Fernando Morientes said:
Today is a special day when we can bring one of our teams to India for the fans to enjoy in person. It will be a special moment when Girona FC run out at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.Fernando Morientes
At the event, Morientes spoke about the sacking of Spanish coach Julen Lopetegui just before the World Cup, his favourite World Cup moment and more.
How much does a change of coach affect a team?
At first the news comes as a shock, because the coach with whom you went through the qualifiers is gone. But the players are professional. After two-three days of shock, you focus on what you are and try to win. So it’s not that relevant.
Are you happy with Spain’s performance so far in the World Cup?
Spain is in the round of 16 now. Now the team needs to improve, because what Spain has shown so far will be not enough in the knockout stage. We need to keep our attack game intact.
Is Fernando Hierro the right person to coach the Spanish side?
Fernando Hierro has a lot of experience, both as a player and as a manager. His decisions are probably going to be the right ones. Spain’s performance so far hasn’t been convincing, but things can change drastically in one match. He knows the Spanish Football Association, he knows the group of players. His experience makes him the right person for the challenge.
Are you worried about Spain’s form?
I am not worried about Spain’s performance. The attitude will be different in the knockout matches. I am convinced that Hierro will have this clear in his mind and will plan accordingly.
What is your favourite moment in the FIFA World Cup?
My favourite moment was in the 1998 World Cup when I scored twice against Bulgaria. I was 22 years old at that time.
