The first day of the 21st Commonwealth Games was fairly successful for Indian athletes as lifters Mirabai Chanu and Gururaja bagged medals in their respective categories.

However, as the lifters put the country on the map on Thursday, there isn’t much to look forward to on the second day for the Indian athletes, as weightlifting was the only medal event where the Indians are competing.

Gururaja won the silver medal for the 56kg category while Mirabai Chanu clinched gold after lifting 196kg.
Gururaja won the silver medal in the 56kg men’s weightlifting category while Mirabai Chanu clinched gold after lifting a record breaking 196kg in the 48 kg women’s category.

However, there were disappointments and mixed fortunes too as the women’s hockey team lost 2-3 to Wales in its tournament opener. Rani Rampal’s team now play Malaysia on Friday at 10am.
