Army chief General Bipin Rawat on Sunday, 21 July approved Indian cricketer MS Dhoni’s request to train with the parachute regiment of the Indian Army for two months, news agency ANI reported quoting sources close to the matter.

The former Indian skipper had requested the Indian Army to allow him to train with a territorial army battalion of the Parachute regiment for two months, after opting out of cricket duties for the time being.

The source told ANI that the request has now been approved by the Indian Army Chief Bipin Rawat and honorary Lt Colonel MS Dhoni will train with the Parachute regiment, part of which will take place in Jammu and Kashmir.

However, the source told ANI that Dhoni will not be a part of any active operation.

MS Dhoni has made himself unavailable for India’s tour of West Indies for three T20’s, three ODI’s and two test matches, to take place from 3 August to 3 September.

Dhoni was awarded the honorary rank of Lt Colonel in 2011. He is a part of the Territorial Army’s 106 Battalion, one of the two battalions that the army has for the parachute regiment.

Dhoni has earlier trained with the elite Para regiment of the Indian Army in 2015.
