Saina Nehwal has created history by becoming the first Indian woman to be ranked World No.1 in badminton.

On Friday, Saina beat her Indonesian opponent, Hana Ramadhini 21-15, 21-12 in the women’s singles quarterfinal and was a win away from the No.1 ranking.

But then, World and All-England Champion, Spain’s Carolin Marin, was upset in her semi-final.

And that, catapulted Saina to World No.1 even before her semifinal.

This news obviously got Saina’s adrenalin flowing because she then made short work of Japan’s Yui Hasatomo in the semifinal, and will now play Thailand’s Ratchanok Intanon in the final.

President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi both congratulated Saina on her achievement.

Prakash Padukone was the first Indian to be ranked No.1 in world badminton, after winning the All England Championship in 1980.
