After getting boxed during the first lap in the men’s 800m finals, Indian runners Manjit Singh and Jinson Johnson showed incredible grit to burst ahead of their opponents and finish at the top two spots of the 800m final at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta.
Despite being at the fourth spot till the last 90 meters, Manjit Singh managed to sprint past the leaders to claim gold in 1:46.15 minutes whereas Johnson bagged his silver at 1:46.35.
Twitter erupted in joy as India won its 3rd gold medal in athletics at the Asiad. President Ram Nath Kovind congratulated Manjit stating that his performance has made the country extremely proud.
MP Rajyavardhan Rathore congratulated Johnson on his fantastic run and also called Singh “sensational”.
BJP President Amit Shah and journalist Rajat Sharma also congratulated the winners.
India’s medal tally stands at 49 after Day 10 of the Asian Games.
