India’s last test in the five-match series against England scheduled to take place in Chennai starting 16 December might be relocated after Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa passed away late Monday night.

A Group B Ranji Trophy match between Odisha and Jharkhand, which was supposed to take place in Dindigul, a city in Tamil Nadu, from 7 December, will also be rescheduled.

The Indian cricket board has decided to “wait and watch” before deciding on a possible shift of venue, said BCCI secretary Ajay Shirke. He added that they were in constant touch with the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association on the “mood and sentiment of the people”.

BCCI has not taken any decision with regard to the Chennai Test match. We are keeping a close watch on the situation and we are taking the inputs from the local host association as to what is the mood and sentiment of the people and based on what evolves, the final decision on the (Test) match will be taken.

Shirke however did not give indication about an alternate plan or deadline on the decision of the issue, and just said that the situation was “evolving” and that they were “monitoring the situation almost on hourly or daily basis”.

Tamil Nadu went into a seven-day mourning as Jayalalithaa passed away in Chennai’s Apollo Hospital.
