Tagging anything that is critical of the government or the ruling party – be it in all seriousness or just a joke – as anti-national has become such a norm that we don’t even bat an eye at it. That is why when stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra put up this video on social media earlier this March, he didn’t take offence at the initial backlash he received.
But it didn't take long for the backlash to escalate to serious death threats, and Kamra had to take to social media to address the issue.
Kamra also clarified that he had no qualms with the criticism to the content he produced.
I understand a difference of opinion & I’m all for it. But our difference don’t allow you to threaten me. At least, not yet, they don’t!Kunal Kamra, Stand-Up Artist
After Kamra’s post went viral about the issue, several came out in support of him. In fact, most of those who had threatened him online, had also seen reason in his words and apologised for the same. In a statement on social media, Kamra explained the following:
Kamra has decided to let bygones be bygones and to not irk the trolls even more but to put his mother at ease, who is upset over the entire issue. But he has plans to come back with an equal, or even more aggressive content. So satire lovers can stay tuned for that.
