The by elections in four Lok Sabha constituencies and 10 assembly seats that was held in Puducherry which is a Union Territory and the states of Assam, Tripura, Madhya Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Arunachal Pradesh was a crucial election, as it was held right after the Centre’s decision to ban on old Rs 500 and Rs 1000 in order to keep a check on blackmoney.

The ruling parties retained their seats in the Lok Sabha assemblies, with TMC, AIADMK and BJP sweeping all three seats in the states of West Bengal, Tamil Nadu and Madhya Pradesh respectively.

While BJP's win in MP and Assam warranted the BJP-led Centre's decision to demonetise Rs 500 and Rs 1000 currencies, TMC's win in West Bengal reassured the party's stance on demonetisation being an anti-poor move.
