Samajwadi Party’s national vice president Kiranmoy Nanda declared on Monday that Akhilesh remains the party’s choice for Chief Ministerial candidate for the Assembly election in 2017, reports Business Standard.
The statement from Nanda came days after party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav evaded a question about Akhilesh’s candidacy and said that the party’s parliamentary board and legislators will decide who will be the CM candidate in 2017.
Nanda maintained that Akhilesh will retain the position of Chief Minister and that the party supremo’s statement was only in reference to the procedure.
The tussle between the brother and son of Mulayam Singh Yadav has left the party without a decision over the CM candidate.
“On one side are the old guard led by party supremo Mulayam Singh Yadav, his brother Shivpal and Amar Singh. UP CM Akhilesh Yadav, supported by Mulayam’s cousin Ram Gopal, and his team of young Turks, are on the other side of the battle line,” writes Vivek Awasthi on The Quint.
The General Secretary of the party Ram Gopal Yadav reportedly wrote to Mulayam recently, warning him against naming Akhilesh as the CM candidate.
