In a bid to create a more authentic universe in their films, filmmakers have now been focusing on getting the dialect of a certain region right by hiring specific dialect coaches. Also because quite a few films that have released in the recent past have their roots in the heartlands.

A dialect coach trains an actor to create a certain voice and speech of a certain region. The most recent example is of course Super 30 for which Hrithik Roshan had to perfect the Bihari dialect. And even though Hrithik’s accent has received a mixed response. It’s still commendable that the filmmakers decided to get a dialect coach on board for the same.

Remember the earlier days, when every South Indian would say ‘aiyo!!’ or a Bihari would say ‘Ka hai babua’? The generalisation was massive. Even in the recent past there have been some horrid accents in films like Chennai Express, Half Girlfriend and more recently Jabariya Jodi.

What does it take to train these actors? Also how does one navigate through their stardom and their preferences? Two dialect coaches answer all this.

On this week’s episode of OffScreen, Ganesh Kumar who trained Hrithik Roshan for Super 30 and Sunita Sharma who trained Kangana Ranaut for Tanu Weds Manu Returns and the entire cast of Dangal, talk about what it’s like to train big stars, how do you maintain the authenticity when trying to make a ‘Hindi film’, and dealing with criticism.

On OffScreen, we will be talking movies, web shows and to the people who work behind the scenes to make the magic happen ‘on screen’.
