Veteran leader Mallikarjun Kharge took charge as the new Congress president on Wednesday, 26 October, during a ceremony for the presentation of the election certificate.
Several prominent leaders of the party attended the event at the All India Congress Committee headquarters, including outgoing Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, KC Venugopal, Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, and also Kharge's opponent in the election, Shashi Tharoor.
The 80-year-old leader had been declared the winner of the election on 19 October, after winning 7,897 votes against Tharoor's 1,072.
For the first time in 23 years, the party has a president who does not belong to the Gandhi family.
