The deaths of two students killed by speeding buses sparked protests in Bangladesh. The protests intensified and became an embarrassment to the government in Bangladesh, reported Associate Press.
A well-known photographer and activist was arrested by policemen in plain clothes on Sunday, 5 August, following his comments against Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on national television. Shaidul Alam had said in a TV interview that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina had no credibility and was using "brute force" to stay in power. Amnesty International has demanded Alam's immediate release.
Pro-government youth groups attacked the protesters on Sunday.
While it was less chaotic on Monday with sporadic protests, the police used tear gas against protesters at Dhaka's East West University.
Hasina's party alleged that the opposition is manipulating student anger to create discord.
