Assad described the “liberation of Aleppo” as a historic moment but the war has vandalised the ancient city.

The Battle of Aleppo, which started in 2012, has ruined the most ancient city of Syria. Over the years, air strikes has razed libraries, mosques and other culturally rich sites to the ground. Beneath the rubble of a ruined city lies the memory of a beauty now lost forever to the world.

Far from the images of blood, death and broken concrete that have been coming from Aleppo, these photos give a glimpse of the beautiful city that used to be.

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad described what he called the "liberation of Aleppo", as a historic moment but the four-year-old war has vandalised the ancient city.
