College classrooms turned into warzones in the Kashmir Valley for a second time this week as students picked up stones and rods while clashing with security forces on Monday. This came on a day when colleges reopened in the state after a five-day shutdown ordered by the government, something that was triggered after students protested security forces entering a college in south Kashmir’s Pulwama town on 12 April.

Police said the clashes emanated from SP College and soon spread to the streets of Regal Chowk and adjoining areas.

The students from the Women's College also joined the protests, which spread to other parts of the commercial hub, the officials said.

The clashes happened on the same day when Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and urged him to initiate a dialogue to contain the deteriorating situation in the Valley.
