Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton on Wednesday conceded her election loss to Republican Donald Trump and said she offered to work with the president-elect.
"Last night I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans," Clinton told supporters and staff at a Manhattan hotel in her concession speech.
“This is painful and will be for a long time,” Hillary said amid cheers from the audience. “This is not an outcome we had hoped for and I’m sorry that we did not win this election for the values we shared and the vision we hold for our country.”
She thanked her supporters for being the “best of America”, reminding them that this campaign was not “about one person, or one election.”
I want you to remember this, our campaign was not about one person, or one election but about America. We have seen that our country is more deeply divided than we imagined.
There were measured references to the graceful accept of defeat and allowing a peaceful transition of power, unlike what Trump had threatened with had he lost the election.
Our constitution demands a peaceful transition, and we don’t just respect that, we cherish that.
Following her shocking defeat to Republican candidate Donald Trump, this was her first address.
Her running mate, Tim Kaine opened the stage for her, introducing her as a “great history maker”.
Clinton urged her supporters to do what they can as citizens to make America a better country noting that the election results showed how deeply divided the nation was.
"Donald Trump is going to be our president. We owe him an open mind and the chance to lead."
I have spent my entire adult life fighting for what is right, I have had successes and setbacks, you will have them too, please never stop fighting for what is right.
