US President Donald Trump was all praise for India and PM Modi a while speaking at the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in Vietnam on 10 November. While addressing the summit, Trump praised India's "astounding" growth after it opened its economy, and lauded Prime Minister Narendra Modi, saying he had been working successfully to bring the vast country and its people together.
Since India opened its economy, it has achieved astounding growth and a new world of opportunities for its expanding middle class. He pointed out that India was celebrating the 70th anniversary of its independence and highlighted that the country was a sovereign democracy with a population of 1.3 billion, the largest democracy in the world.
The US president also used his speech at the APEC business meet to promote his vision for a free and open Indo- Pacific region.
"We have been friends, partners and allies in the Indo-Pacific for a long, long time," he said. "The story of this region in recent decades is the story of what is possible when people take ownership of their future."
Trump also praised countries like Indonesia, Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia and Japan, and briefly touched on the bloody history of the Vietnam war.
"Today we are no longer enemies, we are friends," Trump said
