  • A proposal to conclude suspended Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff’s impeachment trial in mid-July, as opposed to early August, was rejected by her supporters in the Senate, reports EFE news agency. This impedes consensus on the schedule for Upper House proceedings.

  • The proposal by Sen. Simone Tebet of the Brazilian Democratic Movement Party (PMDB) – which is led by interim head of state Michel Temer – was accepted by a clear majority of the impeachment committee’s senators but opposed by the suspended President’s supporters.

  • Brazil’s Supreme Court will decide the matter in the coming days. If Rousseff is found guilty of violating budget laws, Temer would serve out the rest of his term, which expires on 1 January 2019.
