London Mayor Sadiq Khan responded to the US President’s Twitter tirade against him – launched after Saturday’s London attacks – saying Trump should not be welcome to visit UK given “the circumstances, where his policies go against everything we stand for”.
In an interview with Channel 4 News on Monday, Khan was asked about Trump’s seeming conflict with him, to which he said:
My position remains the same. I don’t think we should be rolling out the red carpet to the President of the USA in the circumstances, where his policies go against everything we stand for.Sadiq Khan, Mayor, London
Khan also went on to outline what constitutes “a special relationship” between allies.
When you have a special relationship, it is no different from when you’ve got a close mate. You stand with them in times of adversity. But you call them out when they’re wrong. And there are many things about which Donald Trump is wrong.
The US President ignited the controversy with a jibe against Khan on Twitter stemming from the misinterpretation of the latter’s statement regarding the London attacks.
Trump did not stop there, posting another stinging tweet a day later in response to the clarification by the Mayor’s office (which said that the Trump had misquoted Khan):
This is what Khan’s statement concerning the London attacks, in which seven people were killed, said:
Londoners will see an increased police presence today and over the course of the next few days. No reason to be alarmed. One of the things the police and all of us need to do is make sure we’re as safe as we possibly can be.Sadiq Khan
