At least 84 people have been killed and 100 injured in the southern French town of Nice when a truck ran into a crowd celebrating Bastille Day on Thursday night.

The driver, who drove at 50 kilometres per hour for over 100 metres along the famed Promenade des Anglais seafront before hitting the mass of spectators, was shot dead. Officials said weapons and grenades were found inside the 25-tonne, unmarked articulated truck.

Rukmini Callimachi, a correspondent for The New York Times who focuses on Al-Qaeda and ISIS activities, and Amarnath Amarasingam, a doctoral candidate of Religious Studies in Canada, decoded the attack in a series of tweets.
