At the World Economic Forum in Davos, on Friday, 26 January, US President Donald Trump said that the world is witnessing the resurgence of a strong and prosperous America.

He said that US cannot have free and open trade if some countries exploit the system at the expense of the others, also adding, “I will always put America first but America first does not mean America alone.”

On Free and Open Trade

Trump also warned trading partners on Friday that Washington would no longer tolerate unfair trade, saying predatory practices were distorting markets.

"The United States will no longer turn a blind eye to unfair trade practices," Trump told chief executives, bankers and political leaders at the WEF in Davos.

We cannot have free and open trade if some countries exploit the system at the expense of others.

Trump used his speech to the World Economic Forum in Switzerland to outline his work to overhaul the US tax system and slash regulations.

He said his work is beginning to pay dividends, pointing out that 2.4 million jobs have been created since his 2016 elections and noting that companies like Apple are planning to invest billions in the US.

Trump said he's making progress on giving Americans the dream of a "great job, a safe home" and a "better life" for their children.

On His Relationship with the Press

In his speech, Trump said that he was always loved by the media as a businessman and he could realise "how fake" the press could be only after he joined politics and assumed presidency.

As a businessman, I was always treated really well by the press... and it wasn’t until I became a politician that I realised how nasty, how mean, how vicious and how fake the press can be.
Donald Trump

His statement was met with a scurry of hisses and boos that came from the audience that contained a large number of journalists at the World Economic Forum (WEF).

His comment on his complicated relationship with the media came soon after he held a ‘Fake News Awards’, in which The New York Times topped the list drawn up by him. The term ‘fake news’ also became one of the most used phrases of 2017.

On Containing Terrorism

Donald Trump, in his speech, also said that America is highly committed to ensuring that Afghanistan is not a safe haven for terrorists and also urged other nations to invest in their own defences to make the world safer from rogue regimes.

He also added that the United States was committed to working with allies and partners to destroy terrorist organisations such as ISIS.

I want to thank those nations represented here today that have joined in these crucial efforts. You are not just securing your own citizens, but saving lives and restoring hope for millions.

When it comes to terrorism, Trump said the US would do what is necessary to defend its citizens and borders. Efforts are on for securing the country's immigration system as a matter of both national and economic security, he added.

To make the world safer from rogue regimes, terrorism, and revisionist powers, we are asking our friends and allies to invest in their own defences and to meet their financial obligations. Our common security requires everyone to contribute their fair share.
Donald Trump

He said the US is leading a broad coalition to deny terrorists control of their territory and populations, to cut off their funding, and to discredit their wicked ideology.

In a Q&A following his speech, he also announced in front of several political leaders that he had made 15 new friends at a dinner on Thursday, three of whom were of Indian-origin.
