In what surely has resulted in the worst start for one of the employees of Huawei Technologies, the Chinese tech giant wished its followers “Happy New Year” on Twitter but as it is evident from their tweet, it was done from an iPhone.

This was done to the horror of Huawei’s top rank, who has now demoted the employees responsible for the gaffe.

One unnamed employee and Huawei's director of digital marketing were demoted and had their monthly salary slashed by 5,000 yuan (USD 730), according to the memo widely shared on China's Twitter-like platform Weibo, reported PTI.

Huawei's Corporate Senior Vice President Chen Lifang confirmed that the gaffe took place when Sapient used an iPhone with a Hong Kong SIM card to send the New Year greeting on Twitter after experiencing "VPN problems".

Huawei dislodged Apple last year from its position as the world's second biggest smartphone-seller, below global number one Samsung.

While the mix-up did rankle Huawei, Twitteratis had the final laugh, apart from Tim Cook.

Another Twitter user was quick to point out that this could have possibly happened for Huawei Malaysia.

Calling it an “Oopsie” is surely an understatement but one Twitter user has opted for a subtle description.

It’s 2019, we have cars in space and InSight on Mars but this is definitely not Huawei’s “smart move”!
