German Fashion Designer, 85-year-old Karl Lagerfeld passed away in Paris on Tuesday, 19 February, sources close to Chanel told The Guardian.
The creative director for Chanel and Fetti, Lagerfeld had reportedly missed several fashion shows, including Chanel’s haute couture show in Paris in January - leading to many speculations about his health.
Lagerfeld entered the world of fashion as an assistant to Pierre Balmain in 1955. The milestone in his life took place in 1983, when he joined Chanel, where he spent a record-breaking 36 years working to expand the brand.
Lagerfeld had a signature look in his later years - a dark suit, white pony-tailed hair and tinted sunglasses. He had famously once said:
“I am like a caricature of myself, and I like that. It is like a mask. And for me the Carnival of Venice lasts all year long.”Karl Lagerfeld
Lagerfeld's designs quickly trickled down to low-end retailers, giving him an almost unprecedented impact on the entire fashion industry, The Associated Press reported.
