(This article was first published on 11 November 2016 and has been re-posted from The Quint’s archives to mark Nostradamus’ birth anniversary.)
Nostradamus, the famous 16th century French seer whose predictions – including those about the rise of Hitler and the collapse of the World Trade Centre – seem to have uncannily come true, is believed to have also predicted Donald Trump becoming US President.
Here’s proof: The seer wrote that a “great, shameless, audacious brawler will be elected governor of the army”. Anyone else hear “Trump, Trump, Trump... will be elected commander-in-chief of the world’s most powerful army”?
Not only this, he also reportedly talked of a “battle of the sexes” – one between the “blonde” one and the “fork” nosed one (Clinton vs Trump?).
Not blown away already? Here are some other things he predicted.
Obama Will be the Last President?
This one is both confusing and intriguing. Nostradamus had supposedly predicted Obama’s victory in the 2013 elections. He, however, also seems to have warned that Obama would be America’s “last president.”
Well, if one reads “last president” as “last good president” and considers the fact that orange (Read: Donald Trump) is the new black (Read: Obama), this particular prediction is perhaps being realised already.
World War III
Now this one will be of interest to many. If one believes Nostradamus’ prophecies, a 27-year-long war will start between two major global powers. The incident will coincide with the “appearance of a comet in the sky.”
Are the rise of an aggressive China and Trump’s presidency fodder enough for us to believe that a huge global showdown is on its way?
White House Games
Nostradamus is also believed to have said that the White House will play “war-like” games and scheme to “destroy” the world.
Now, we have an aggressive China, the rise of ISIS and Islamic terror, and a belligerent, hot-headed man leading the world’s biggest power. All this seems to be the perfect ingredients for the “war-like games” and destruction Nostradamus wrote about.
The Rise and Rise of Modi?
“From 2014 to 2026, a man will lead India, whom initially people will hate but after that people will love him so much that he will be engaged in changing the country’s plight and direction.”
This was apparently Nostradamus’s prophecy about Narendra Modi, as asserted by BJP minister Kiren Rijiju. While one can’t independently verify the translation, the implications are intriguing.
Middle East Will be Set on Fire
According to his prophecy, petrol and oil in the Gulf states in the Middle East will be set on fire. He also predicted that several explosions will occur around the Middle East.
An intensifying civil war has already changed the landscape in the Middle East – both socio-economically and culturally. The Arab Spring movement in nations including Egypt, Syria and Libya has further added to the unrest.
In addition to this, the Syrian refugee crisis and the rise of the ISIS give us reasons to believe that his predictions may come to pass.
The Poles Will Melt
All the talk about global warming already has everybody worried. While the North pole has been gradually melting, there hasn’t been anything mentioned about the South Pole.
Drastic Weather Patterns
“Water shall be seen to rise as the ground is seen to fall underneath.”
According to the seer, unusual weather patterns will intensify across countries in 2016.
With global warming already going into overdrive, each month this year hotter than the previous, could this prediction come true?
Israel’s Fate
In paragraph 34 of the Epistle, Nostradamus said that “Jerusalem might be assailed on all sides, and a Western naval force (from the United States or other nations in the New World) will help Israel in fighting the forces of its future adversaries.”
Finally, here’s another one that could be a sketchy reference to Trump, and it’s slightly scary.
“The false trumpet concealing madness will cause Byzantium to change its laws. From Egypt there will go forth a man who wants the edict withdrawn, changing money and standards.”
If Trump is the “trumpet” concealing his own “madness”, and “money standards” implies global economy, the future seems pretty bleak folks.
