CLAIM
An image of Congress President Rahul Gandhi with a woman, allegedly his wife, has gone viral on social media platforms Facebook and Twitter.
The claims also suggest that Gandhi has two children and his alleged wife in the photo is Colombian.
The claim was first flagged to The Quint by a reader Chiranjeev Kothari, who sent us a screenshot on our WhatsApp helpline questioning the claim’s authenticity.
“विकीलीक्स ने खुलासा किया है कि राउल विंची शादीशुदा है। इसके 2 बच्चे हैं जो लन्दन में रहते है। इसकी बीबी कोलंबियन है। पहली संतान 14 वर्ष का लड़का नियाक है और दूसरी सन्तान माइनक 10 साल की लड़की है। अविवाहित कहकर राहुल गांधी देश को गुमराह कर रहा है!”
(Translated: Wikileakds has exposed that Rahul Vinci is married. He has two kids who live in London. His wife is Colombian. First kid is 14-year-old boy Nyak and the other a 10-year-old girl Minic. Rahul Gandhi is misleading the nation by calling himself unmarried.)
FACT
The viral claim circulated on social media is fake.
With a simple reverse image, The Quint found that the woman in the photo is a Spanish actor and political scientist Nathalia Ramos and is not Colombian as claimed in the post.
The photo was originally posted by her in 2017 on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
On both Facebook and Instagram, Ramos had captioned her picture with Rahul Gandhi with “Last night with the eloquent and insightful Rahul Gandhi. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to meet and listen to so many brilliant thinkers from all parts and perspectives of the world. It is only with an open mind and open heart that we can really make the world a better place. Thank you Berggruen Institute for opening mine. #IdeasMatter”
No Report on Wikileaks
On scanning the Wikileaks database for any such information on their website, The Quint could not find any news of Rahul Gandhi being married to any Colombian woman or having children living in London.
The Quint has reached out to Wikileaks for a comment.
