WHAT’S THE TRUTH?

The visuals are from Typhoon Jebi, which was reported to be the strongest typhoon in 25 years, and had hit Japan in 2018. Now the same visuals are being shared as destruction caused by Typhoon Hagibis, which is reportedly the worst storm to have hit Japan since 1958.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

On conducting a reverse search on one of the key frames of the video using Yandex search engine, we came across multiple reports which suggested that the video is from 2018.

We then searched with the keywords “Typhoon Jebi 2018 Japan” and came across multiple news reports on YouTube with similar visuals. A video uploaded by ITV News on 4 September 2018 had the same visual of the vehicle being swept away due to the storm.

The Quint was also able to match more visuals of the video with the 2018 typhoon footage carried by other news organisations. For instance: These visuals which show a flooded area was also found in an Al Jazeera English video uploaded on 4 September 2018 with a caption “Typhoon Jebi: Strongest storm to hit Japan in 25 years”.
