A photo of Congress leader Jaivardhan Singh, a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) from Raghogarh, Madhya Pradesh and son of former Chief Minister Digvijay Singh, is viral on social media.

What is the claim?: Users have shared this photo as a recent incident with the claim that after Madhya Pradesh Congress President Kamal Nath's statement, party workers 'tore' Singh's kurta.

This claim has come up when there is a controversy within the Congress party regarding ticket distribution before the Madhya Pradesh assembly elections.

(Archives of similar claims can be found here, here, here and here)

Is it true?:  No, the viral photo has no connection with the ticket distribution for the 2023 Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections.

  • This photo is from 2021 when Madhya Pradesh Congress had demonstrated against inflation, and Singh's clothes were torn in the clash with the police force.

How did we find out?: We ran a Google reverse image search on the viral image and found the same image on Jaivardhan Singh's official X account dated 11 August 2021.

  • Taking a clue from Singh's post, we searched for news reports from 2021 and found one in which Jaivardhan's 'torn kurta' had been mentioned.

  • The CNN News18 Hindi report, published on 12 August 2021, noted that Jaivardhan Singh's kurta was torn during the Youth Congress' demonstration.

Ticket distribution controversy in Madhya Pradesh: On 15 October, Congress had released the first list of candidates for the Madhya Pradesh Assembly elections.

  • Since the release of this list, voices of protest have been raised within the party regarding ticket distribution in the state.

What did Kamal Nath say about "tearing clothes?": A video of former Chief Minister Nath is going viral online.

  • In the clip, Nath, surrounded by workers, is seen saying, "You people go and tear the clothes of Digvijay Singh and Jaivardhan."

  • This video is said to be of the time when supporters of Congress leader Virendra Raghuvanshi reached Kamal Nath's bungalow and demanded a ticket for their leader.

  • However, later Digvijay and Nath appeared together on a stage on 17 October and discussed and joked about the viral statement and stating that there was no rift between the two.

  • Congress launched its election manifesto at Ravindra Bhawan in Bhopal. During this, Kamal Nath gave a clarification on his statement.

  • Kamal Nath told journalists, "You first asked a question about tearing Digvijay Singh's clothes." So I told you in reply that if you don't listen then you should also tear his (Digvijay Singh's) clothes.

  • After this, Digvijay Singh interrupted Kamal Nath on the stage and said, "One minute, one minute, whose signatures are on Form A and B?" the PCC President..then whose clothes should be torn?

Conclusion: Clearly, the viral claim is false. A photo of Jaivardhan Singh in a 'torn kurta' is from 2021 and has been falsely linked to the upcoming Madhya Pradesh assembly elections.
