CLAIM
A picture depicting Congress President Rahul Gandhi having a meal with Pakistan PM Imran Khan has gone viral. The caption says, “ये इमरान मियां के साथ चिकन बिरयानी कौन खा रहा है; अब होगा न्याय जनता करेगी”
(Translated: Who is this eating chicken biryani with Imran Sir? Justice will happen now, the public will do so.)
The image has been widely circulated on Facebook.
One Facebook post had 2.5 K shares when this article was being written.
A user also tweeted about the same image.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The viral image in question is doctored.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
On doing a simple search with the keywords, “Rahul Gandhi” and “Imran Khan”, no news about them meeting popped up. A meeting of this level would have definitely been covered by the media.
Moreover, a similar photo-shopped image claiming that PM Modi had dinner with Imran Khan had been doing the rounds in early April. The Quint did a detailed story back then and found out that the image was altered.
On conducting a reverse image search for the image, The Quint had found out that the original image of Imran Khan was taken in 2015.
This image was tweeted by a user on 5 July 2015. Here, Imran Khan is seen with his former wife Reham Khan.
For Gandhi’s picture, a search for “Rahul Gandhi eating” gave various results. We eventually found the original image which was clicked by V Sreenivasa Murthy.
The true image was used by The Hindu to report on the inauguration of the first Indira Canteen at Jayanagar in Bengaluru. This was reported in August, 2017.
Thus, Rahul Gandhi and Imran Khan did not have “chicken biryani” together as the viral post suggests.
