CLAIM
After a 24-year-old man, named Tabrez Ansari, was beaten for hours on suspicion of theft in Jharkhand, social media has been abuzz with misinformation pertaining to the incident and the aftermath.
Ansari was beaten up and was later handed over to the Jharkhand Police and was sent to Saraikela jail. However, three days after his arrest, the 24-year old was rushed to the Saraikela Sadar (district) Hospital after he complained of “uneasiness” where he succumbed to his injuries on 22 June.
Now a post on WhatsApp is being circulated which claims that Ansari's killer is dead.
The Quint received a query about the same on its WhatsApp helpline number.
TRUE OR FALSE?
Well, there is not even an ounce of truth to the claim. Firstly, the claim that says ‘the killer has being killed’ is a giveaway. There is no one person accused of killing Ansari, but 11 people were arrested who continue to be in judicial custody.
WHAT WE FOUND OUT
The Quint spoke to Jharkhand’s Saraikela Superintendent of Police (SP), Kartik S who denied any such claim and confirmed that all the eleven accused continue to be in judicial custody.
He further said that the police is maintaining high vigil to ensure law and order situation in the villages of Saraikela-Kharsawan and Dhatkidih.
Of the 11 arrested, Kartik added that one Pappu Manda has now claimed that he was not in the area when the incident took place. However he refrained from commenting further on the matter stating that it is being investigated.
ACTION SO FAR
- An Special Investigation Team (SIT) was set up to look into the death of Tabrez Ansari.
- Two police personnel were also suspended in connection with the incident. They were officers-in-charge of Kharaswan and Sini police stations, sources told PTI.
