A message claiming IndiGo airlines is giving two free air tickets to “everyone” to celebrate their 12th anniversary is going viral on WhatsApp. There is a chance that you may have received this message on the instant messaging platform as well.
THIS IS A FAKE FORWARD
An official press release by the airlines says that IndiGo was beginning a 4-day anniversary sale to celebrate their 12th year in business, starting 10 July 2018. The airlines was offering 12 lakh seats across 57 cities on its network at a discount of upto 25 percent.
Nowhere does it mention giving “two free tickets to everyone.”
The press release stated that IndiGo turned 12 on 4 August, and directed customers to book the air tickets on goindigo.in – the official website of the organisation.
YOU SHOULD READ ON BECAUSE...
The story doesn’t end with the message being fake. According to SMHoaxSlayer, the URL that is circulated with the fake message is also important.
When one opens the URL - http://indigo.2free.club - it takes them
Once you’ve answered a set of questions, it takes you to a page which says you can claim the ticket. But, it comes with a condition that you must share the message before you can claim the ticket.
THIS IS IMPORTANT. WHY?
The URL is not a part of the official domain of IndiGo airlines. An SMHoax investigation showed that the URL which ends with ‘club’ was created on 16 September 2018, and the owner had many similar addresses registered.
Such URLs are created by ‘scammers’ to get hold of thousands of mobile numbers to sell them to tele marketers, reported SM HoaxSlayer.
You may not lose money, but the next time you receive money for investment purposes or real estate, insurance advertisements, it is likely because you unknowingly revealed your data.
