CLAIM
Some news reports and claims about the government changing the official retirement age for government employees have been doing the rounds over the past couple of days.
The New Indian Express and Amar Ujala carried news reports saying that Centre may lower retirement age of government employees and fix the years of service to 33 years.
According to the reports carried by TNIE and Amar Ujala, and chatter on social media, the Centre plans to change the criteria and retire employees who have completed 33 years of service or on reaching 60 years of age, whichever is earlier.
Many people took to social media to get a clearer picture about whether the Narendra Modi-led government is actually proposing to change the age limit for retirement.
Currently, the general retirement age limit for government employees is 60 years.
WHAT IS THE TRUTH?
The news reports are false. The Quint spoke to the Department of Personnel and Training, which denied any change in the retirement age limit right now and called the news “fake”.
WHAT WE FOUND
We only found two news reports by The New Indian Express and Amar Ujala on the possible change in the retirement age.
The Quint reached out to the Department of Personnel and Training on Thursday, 26 September, to confirm the news and was told the rumours of change are false and no step in this direction has been taken.
“A fake news has been circulated on social media about the change in retirement age, but it is not true at all. Nothing of such nature is happening,” DoPT told The Quint.
