CLAIM

A video from the Unnao farmer protest, where a man is seen mercilessly being lathi-charged by the police, is doing the rounds on social media. The video ends with the man lying on the ground unconscious.

Many netizens shared the same video with a claim that the police continues to thrash the farmers despite his condition.

Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi too shared the 22-second-long video with the same claim but later took it down.

Samajwadi Party Spokesperson Anurag Bhadouria also tweeted the video on Monday with the caption: “शायद पाकिस्तानी किसान को यूपी की पुलिस पीट पीट कर ठोक रही है. वाह भाजपा सरकार. शाबाश यूपी पुलिस लगे रहो..ये किसान बचने नहीं चाहिये. ठोकोतंत्र में लोकतंत्र की बात करते हैं.

The Twitter handle of the All India Mahila Congress also shared the video claiming that the police was beating a farmer even when he was lying unconscious on the ground.

TRUE OR FALSE?

The video that is being circulated is a trimmed one. The full video was uploaded by Unnao Police on their Twitter handle on Tuesday which showed that the man who was being claimed to be unconscious, after a few seconds, sprinted with fear when the police fired gunshots in the air.

WHAT WE FOUND OUT

The Unnao police shared the full footage on Twitter on Monday in which it can be seen that the man lying on the ground, ran after he heard gunshots being fired in the air.

The tweet reads: “कतिपय समाचार चैनलों एवं सोशल मीडिया पर जमीन पर पड़े अधमरे युवक की पिटाई की घटना का सही वीडियो ” (Translated:The correct video of the incident of man being beaten up and lying unconscious on the ground)

Hence, the video that is being shared is a clipped version of the actual video. However, it is not clear if the man received severe injuries.

WHAT IS THE DISPUTE ABOUT?

On Saturday, farmers protested in Unnao for higher compensation for the land acquired for a proposed township, set ablaze a crusher plant and some plastic pipes in the open field near a power sub-station, IANS reported.

The farmers had staged the protest alleging that they have not been properly compensated for their lands that were acquired for Trans Ganga City project, news agency ANI reported.

The District Magistrate had called it the work of some “miscreants”.

"Some miscreants are doing this. We will go to villages and appeal to the people to maintain peace. This is a deed of miscreants. We'll maintain peace and the work will also go on,” he had said, according to ANI.
