CLAIM
A viral video claims that Pakistanis are celebrating the recent victory of Congress in three states – Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and Rajasthan – and they are doing so by participating in a mock funeral procession of Prime Minster Narendra Modi.
The circulated message reads, “Why Pakistanis are celebrating Congress victory in 3 states... By taking modi's funeral... Something which every Indian must ponder...”
Several social media users have shared the video with an identical narrative on Facebook and Twitter.
People in the video are also heard saying, “Mar gaya Modi, haaye haaye, Zor se rolo, saare rolo, milke rolo! ” (Translated: ‘Modi is dead, cry loudly, everybody cry, cry together’).
TRUE OR FALSE?
The video circulating online is making false claims. A tell-tale sign of this is that the people in the procession don’t seem to be shouting the slogans that can be heard loudly in the clip, making it likely that the video has been edited to add the audio afterwards.
A reverse search image on search engine Yandex also showed that the original video dates back to 25 January 2017.
The video was originally Tamil and it showed people raising slogans, "Ayyayo poitare, dei poitara, aiyo Modi! (Oh no, he’s dead. Hey, is he dead? Aiyyo Modi!).” The location of this video could not be ascertained.
In a Google search between 1 January and 30 January 2017, we came across an article by The News Minute that reported how mock funeral processions of PM Modi were being carried out as part of the Jallikattu protests that were happening.
Another indication that the video is from the 2017 Jallikattu protests is that posters very similar to the one seen in the video have been documented as being from those protests.
We also came across several other videos of mock funeral processions held at Chennai’s Marina Beach and other places across Tamil Nadu around the same time.
DIFFERENT CLAIMS IN THE PAST
The same video had been shared in the past with different claims, such as purporting to be of a traders’ protest in Gujarat, and of a farmers’ protest.
