A photo of Narendra Modi has gone viral on social media, which shows the prime minister waving a green flag with a white crescent and star on it, very similar to the Pakistan national flag. The photo was posted by a page on Facebook called ‘Bhashan Ya Rashan’ on 29 January.
The Hindi text along with the photo says, “आ गया अपनी असलियत पे, भक्तो मार जाओ अब कही जाके”, which translates to: “He has shown his real self, Bhakts, go and die somewhere now.”
The viral post that was being shared extensively on social media had 8.5k reactions and 1.4k shares on Facebook at the time this story was published.
TRUE OR FALSE?
This is a fake, morphed image of PM Modi. On Thursday, 21 February, a Twitter user, @pokerhash pointed this out in a thread of tweets. He also blamed the fake news on the Congress, whom he accused of sponsoring the Facebook page which had originally posted the photo.
In his tweet, he also attached the original photo that he said had been morphed.
The Quint also conducted its own research to verify the Twitter user’s claim. Using the reverse image search tool, we were able to track down the original source of the image, which was at an event to inaugurate the Bogibeel Bridge and flag off the rail network on the bridge. All the results of this search threw up similar images from the event in Assam on 25 December.
In the original photo, which we sourced from Modi’s website, Modi is waving a plain green flag.
As is obvious, the two images – the one with the Islamic flag and the plain green flag – are absolutely identical. It is clear that the white crescent and the star have been superimposed on the photo by someone.
