Days after Malayalam actor Priya Prakash Varrier went viral, another video on social media claimed that the day Varrier earned her fame, a captain was martyred on the frontier.
However, the claims laid by the video are false. Varrier's video from the film 'Oru Adaar Love' went viral after 9 February, whereas Captain Kapil Kundu was martyred a week earlier, on 4 February.
Varrier’s video went viral following the release of the song titled ‘Manikya Malaraya Poovi’ from the film, on 9 February.
The video, which garnered a large number of views, accused the media of burying the news of Capt Kundu’s death, prioritising Varrier's virality.
However, the media did cover Kundu's death on 5 February, with the news earning prime coverage in newspapers across the country.
Kundu was set to celebrate his 23rd birthday just six days after he was killed in shelling by Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir's Rajouri district.
According to NDTV, Kundu had already booked a ticket to travel back home to Patuadi, where he was to ring in his birthday with his sisters and mother on 10 February.
(The Quint, in association with BitGiving, has launched a crowdfunding campaign for an 8-month-old who was raped in Delhi on 28 January 2018. The baby girl, who we will refer to as 'Chhutki', was allegedly raped by her 28-year-old cousin when her parents were away. She has been discharged from AIIMS hospital after undergoing three surgeries, but needs more medical treatment in order to heal completely. Her parents hail from a low-income group and have stopped going to work so that they can take care of the baby. You can help cover Chhutki's medical expenses and secure her future. Every little bit counts. Click here to donate.)
