CLAIM
A video has been shared on social media claiming that the person giving the speech is advocate Tehseen Poonawala, who has filed a plea in the Supreme Court against the 10% reservation for the economically weaker sections within the general category.
The video that was posted on Facebook and shared by several internet users shows that it is a Bahujan TV footage and was allegedly shot in Moradabad district of Uttar Pradesh.
TRUE OR FALSE?
The man in the video is not advocate Tehseen Poonawalla and he is not talking against 10% reservation. He is actually Rajratna Ambedkar, great-grandson of Dr BR Ambedkar and the National President of The Buddhist Society of India. The video was originally posted on YouTube by Bahujan TV on 24 October, 2018.
In the video, Ambedkar is not giving a speech against 10% reservation for the economically weaker section within the general category. He is talking about the Ambedkar movement and said, “I have been out of my home for past three-four months...travelling in the entire country to explain people about Babasaheb's movement at this (Buddha) Dhamma Diksha Samaroh.”
He also talked about Buddhism and teachings of Buddha that were adopted by BR Ambedkar himself.
Another fact that cannot be ignored is that 10% reservation for the economically weaker section within general category was approved by the Union Cabinet on 7 January, 2019.
However, advocate Tehseen Poonawalla did file a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Centre's decision to grant 10% quota, according to Indian Express.
The Quint tried to contact Rajratna Ambedkar and will update the article with his response.
