A video of an Uttar Pradesh man Brijpal Maurya, who was locked up in Budaun’s revenue jail for 11 days over his unpaid electricity bill of Rs 80,000 and later died after falling ill, has surfaced which mentions that he was mistaken to be somebody else, reported The Times of India.

In the video, Brijpal can be heard saying that even though his name is correctly mentioned in the revenue certificate, but his father’s name is not the same as what is mentioned in the certificate. He also said that the bill is of a shop that he did not own.

“My brother was kept in a lockup without any fault. The incharge of the revenue jail had lost the keys of the lockup and the lock had to be broken before my brother was taken to hospital. That delay of almost an hour proved too costly for him,” The Times of India quoted Brijpal’s younger brother, Mahesh Maurya as saying.

Brijpal was arrested on 23 September and fell ill on Thursday, 3 October. He died when he was being taken to the hospital.

Further, Dinesh Kumar Singh, Budaun district magistrate suspended three officials of the revenue department, ordered investigation and transferred the tehsildar.

Brijpal’s family members also alleged that the victim was devoid of basic food and water facilities, and that the lock up in which he was kept was not in a proper condition.

Brijpal’s younger brother also said that police has not filed an FIR yet. Budaun SSP Ashok Kumar Tripathi told The Times of India that “action will be taken by investigation committee.
