A stampede during a milk pot procession organised for the speedy recovery of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa has left a 67-year-old woman dead and 15 people injured on Monday.

The procession was organised by former AIADMK minister Agri Krishnamoorthy, and began at the Arulmighu Pachaiamman temple at the foothills of Annmalai Hills in Tiruvannamalai, Tamil Nadu. Around 10,000 people participated – almost double the expected turnout.

A number of women carrying silver pots tried to enter the Pachiamman temple to offer prayers for the ailing Chief Minister, leading to the stampede.

The injured were rushed to the Government Tiruvannamalai Medical college Hospital where Kamala Sammantham, one of the injured, succumbed to her injuries.

Jayalalithaa has been undergoing treatment at the Apollo Hospital in Chennai since 22 September.
