If you or I were to be convicted of a crime and sentenced to jail, we may want to spend the last few minutes of ‘freedom’ with family and friends, maybe wish them goodbye. But not Lalu Prasad Yadav.

When the RJD supremo and former Bihar CM was declared guilty in another fodder scam case by a special CBI court in Ranchi, here’s what he did – he went crazy tweeting! 11 tweets in 22 minutes is no mean feat, is it?

In one 280-character salvo after another, Lalu Prasad Yadav went from talking about the deceptive appearance of ‘truth’ to comparing himself to Nelson Mandela and Martin Luther King!

Don’t believe me? Here’s the proof.

Lalu’s Tweetstorm

He began at 4:21 pm with a line about how “truth can be made to appear as a lie” but in the end, truth will win.

One minute later, he switched to Hindi and alleged that this was a conspiracy by the BJP to ruin his public image.

Two minutes after that, Lalu tweeted a philosophical line about how “a lie can travel half way around the world while the truth is putting on its shoes”.

Putting on its shoes, really?

And then there was the biggest punch of them all. Lalu’s fifth tweet in six minutes had a not-so-subtle attempt at comparing himself to Nelson Mandela, Martin Luther King and BR Ambedkar.

Lalu then proceeded to warn his opponents that he was not alone. “The people of Bihar are standing with me.”

You can trouble me, but you cannot defeat me.

But wait, that quote sounds better in Hindi. Here’s the tweet.

Na zor chalega lathi ka, Lalu lal hai maati ka! (Sticks cannot hurt this son of the soil.)

Again, you know the translation doesn’t match up to the original!

Saath har Bihari hai,
Akela sab par bhaari hai,
Sach ki raksha karne ko,
Lalu ka sangharsh jaari hai!

Not a Happy New Year!

If Lalu had any plans with friends for New Year’s Eve, he’ll have to bail on them. The politician will usher in the new year in Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Central Jail. The quantum of punishment for this case will be announced on 3 January, special CBI judge Shivapal Singh announced today.

Former Bihar Chief Minister Jagannath Mishra as well as six others were acquitted in the case. The case relates to fraudulent withdrawal of Rs 84.5 lakh from Deoghar district treasury. Hearing was completed on 13 December in a special Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) court of Ranchi.

In all, there were 34 accused in the case, out whom 11 died during the course of the trial, while one turned CBI approver and admitted the crime.

What an End to Scam Week

After the 2G acquittals to DMK’s A Raja and Kanimozhi and relief to former Maharashtra CM Ashok Chavan in the Adarsh scam case, the fodder scam verdict will finally bring some smiles to the BJP camp. Here’s Sushil Modi with a potshot on Twitter.

The Congress hit right back.

But it was Twitter funnyman Ramesh Srivats’ tweet from the day before the verdict that took the cake!
