Days after one of the petitioners in the triple talaq case, Ishrat Jahan, joined the BJP, her lawyer, Nazia Elahi Khan, also joined the party. According to an ANI report, the lawyer and activist has joined BJP’s Kolkata unit.
Previously, Ishrat Jahan’s entry was confirmed by the party's Kolkata unit general secretary Sayantan Basu on 31 December.
Sources have said that Ishrat was felicitated by the Howrah BJP unit on Saturday, 30 December, and inducted into the party. Basu had said that a state-level programme to felicitate her is to be organised.
Ishrat was one of the five petitioners in the triple talaq case. Her husband had divorced her over the phone from Dubai in 2014 by uttering the word ‘talaq’ three times.
The controversial Islamic practice was struck down by the Supreme Court on 22 August. West Bengal BJP chief Dilip Ghosh, who is touring various districts in the state, said he had also come to know from party sources that Ishrat had joined the BJP in Howrah.
