Tabrez Ansari's wife Shahista Parveen on Monday, 16 September threatened to kill herself if the accused in her husband's death are not tried for murder, saying she wants her husband’s killers to hang.
“The whole world saw my husband’s murder. Still, my husband’s murderers are being saved by the district administration. If the murder charges are not reinstated against the killers, I will commit suicide outside the DC’s office.”Shahista Parveen
Shahista Parveen and 24-year-old Tabrez Ansari had been married for just two months before he was allegedly beaten up by a mob and forced to chant 'Jai Shri Ram' and 'Jai Hanuman' on 17 June. He succumbed to his injuries in the hospital on 22 June.
Shahista Parveen said she met the District Collector and SP of Ranchi but no one was willing to help.
Her demand is that the charges against the accused be changed from Section 304 (culpable homicide) to Section 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Section 304 allows for imprisonment up to ten years which can be extended to a life term, while section 302 allows for life imprisonment and the death penalty.
Parveen’s statement comes after Jharkhand police dropped the murder charge against the 11 accused, saying instead that the cause of death was sudden cardiac arrest.
The investigating officer on the case, R Narayan, said, “We have sought double opinion (opinion from two doctors) who have confirmed this.”
