Amid reports that Rahul Gandhi would not seek bail in the National Herald case if jail time is ordered, Congress spokespersons said that the party would use all the legal remedies available.

This is the first time the party has spoken out, without rancour or rhetoric, about its strategy for the National Herald case, which will come up in the Delhi court on December 19. There had been talk of Rahul going to jail, if the court so ordered, as a political move. His mother Sonia Gandhi and Congress party treasurer Motilal Vora are also accused in the case.

This is the first time that the Congress has spelt out its line of action on the issue as earlier party strategists had insisted the Gandhis will not seek bail on the day of hearing. Apart from Sonia Gandhi and Rahul, party treasurer Motilal Vora, Oscar Fernandes, Suman Dubey, and Sam Pitroda have been charged with “cheating, criminal conspiracy, misappropriation of property, and breach of trust”, a development the party termed as “political vendetta”. The party’s legal team is of the view that if they move a bail application on Saturday, it is most likely to be granted.
