Local Congress leaders from Bhopal have written to party president Rahul Gandhi requesting him to field Bollywood actor Kareena Kapoor Khan as their candidate for Lok Sabha elections.
The two leaders – Yogendra Singh Guddu and Anas Khan – have suggested that Kareena's candidature would end the party's losing streak in the seat since 1984, reported The Times of India.
“Congress has not won Bhopal seat for more than 25-30 years. We wish that a new face is fielded as Congress candidate to wrest the seat from the BJP. Kareena is the ‘bride of Bhopal’ and we are sure she can do the job for Congress,” Guddu told the newspaper.
Kareena is married to Saif Ali Khan, who is a descendant of the erstwhile royal family of Bhopal.
Saif’s father and cricket legend Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi contested from the seat on a Congress ticket during the Lok Sabha elections in 1991.
Pataudi was soundly defeated by BJP's Sushil Chandra Verma.
However, state Congress media in-charge Shobha Oza told the Times of India that while the local leaders may have written to the party president, the party had not reached out to the actor.
