Hailed as a game changer in the Assam Assembly elections, Himanta Biswa Sarma has hit out at his former party, Congress after the results were declared. He said that he had warned Congress General Secretary Rahul Gandhi about the dipping fortunes of Assam Congress in 2013 but Gandhi had dismissed his criticism with a series of ‘so whats’, reports NDTV.
Sarma, widely seen as the man who is responsible for BJP’s victory in Assam, also called Rahul Gandhi an ‘arrogant’ man and said that whenever anyone goes to see him, the meeting is like a ‘servant-master relationship which is disgusting.’
Today is a day of individual accomplishment for me too, because two years ago, I told Rahul Gandhi that if you go this way, Congress will not even cross (the) 25 seat mark in the state. But he was more interested in playing with his dog, instead of paying attention to the people surrounding him.Himanta Biswas Sarma, Leader, Assam BJP
Himanta Biswa Sarma was the chief architect of the Congress victory in Assam in 2011, but he left the grand old party and joined the BJP in 2015. It is reported that after being close to three-time chief minister Tarun Gogoi for several years, the relationship between the two started to strain due to the attention given to Gaurav Gogoi within the party.
After BJP’s win, Sarma also said that the working style of the BJP is a refreshing change from the top-heavy and disinterested approach of the Gandhis in the Congress party. Congress has managed to obtain 26 seats out of a possible 126 seats, while BJP has won 86 seats in Assam, in the Assembly election.
