Even after DMDK leader Vijayakanth declared, on 10 March, at a rally in Chennai that he will be contesting elections alone, BJP remains hopeful about the alliance with DMDK.

BJP’s national secretary Muralidhar Rao defined Vijayakanth’s stand to go alone as not having an alliance with DMK and AIADMK. He said, “not going to polls with either the DMK or the AIADMK”, according to The Times of India.

Asked about accepting Vijayakanth as CM candidate, he said, “If a serious proposal comes, we will give an answer. It is for Vijayakanth to decide,” he told The Times of India.

He also added that BJP sees DMDK as a “friendly party” which is to fight AIADMK and the DMK on the issues of corruption and bad governance.

Political analyst R Mannivannan told The Times of India that BJP still hopes that the alliance with DMDK will happen.

He said, “The problem is about Vijayakanth and wife Premalatha pulling in different directions on alliance matters probably to evade the pressure within the party as the cadres and many ticket aspirants want to know what the alliance is going to be,” according to The Times of India.
