A day after the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a win in the Gujarat Assembly elections, party president Amit Shah said they had failed the mission to get 150 seats due to the dirty politics of the Congress.

According to a report by NDTV, Shah blamed the Congress for “stooping low and playing caste politics”. He also asked the voters to stay vigilant of “such efforts to spread casteism in the future”.

According to the report, Shah said:

Congress brought the level of the campaign down, because of which our number of seats went down.

In the 2012 polls, the BJP had won 115 seats in the 182-seat Assembly. This year, the number came down to 99.

Congress, which had won 61 seats in 2012, raised its number to 77, this year.

Mission 150: Failed Attempt At Making History

In March, after a thumping win in the Uttar Pradesh elections, the BJP national president hoped to help the party win 150 seats in Gujarat. The saffron party’s best performance in the state has been 127 out of 182 seats in the 2002 polls.

No political party has managed to bag 150 seats in the Gujarat Assembly elections till date. The Congress almost touched the coveted mark when it bagged 149 seats under veteran Madhav Singh Solanki, in 1985.

Addressing BJP workers, Shah had then said:

After 325 seats in UP, go out with confidence that we will get more than 150 seats in Gujarat.
