Officials from the Uttar Pradesh's electricity board on Thursday went on a surprise visit to former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Mulayam Singh Yadav's 12-bedroom home in Etawah only to discover that he had to his account unpaid electricity bills worth Rs 4 lakh. He has been given time till the end of April to pay his outstanding bill.

The 77-year-old's home overused the allocated limit of 5 kW-a-day by eight times. The officials have now changed the allowance to 40-kW per day – for which he has to pay a larger amount, as reported by NDTV.

Over a dozen officials conducted the inspection at the Samajwadi Party convener's home. The raid was a part of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Aditayanath's promise of 24-hour power supply to all the district headquarters, as India Today reported.

A heated swimming pool, several elevators, a mini-AC plant to keep the home temperature controlled were found by the electricity board as factors contributing to the power theft and sky-rocketing bill.

The Samajwadi Party was at the helm of affairs in the state until March, when it was toppled by the Bharatiya Janata Party, which won 312 of the 403 seats.
