Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi has initiated the process for the appointment of Justice Sharad Arvind Bobde as his successor. He wrote a letter to the Centre recommending Justice Bobde as the next CJI, reported news agency ANI.
After CJI Gogoi, who is retiring on 17 November 2019, Justice Bobde is the most senior judge in the Supreme Court.
It is convention for the senior-most judge to be appointed Chief Justice.
Bobde has had a tenure of eight years in the Supreme Court of India. He is a former Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court and the Chancellor of Maharashtra National Law University. He is due to retire on 23 April 2021.
