This incident comes only days after a Tripura journalist Santanu Bhaumik was killed while covering a roadblock by a tribal party – Indigenous People’s Forum of Tripura – in Mandai Tehsil, on 20 September.
Bhaumik was working for a local cable channel ‘Din Raat’. Several local media persons held protests outside Tripura Chief Minister Manik Sarkar’s residence to condemn Bhaumik’s death, with the regional dailies running blank editorials in solidarity.
Similarly, eminent journalist Gauri Lankesh was shot outside her Bengaluru residence by unidentified men on a bike on the night of 5 September, sparking nationwide protests.
